life casting

Life casting is a popular yet complicated process for art enthusiasts, sculptors, film and television prosthetics, special effects.as well as mask making for costumes and Cosplay.

The process involves applying skin-safe materials directly to the model or ‘sitter’ in numerous layers to build up a ‘skin’ and then, over that a 2 (or more) part jacket to hold the skin in the right shape.

It takes time! A life cast mould can take between 30 mins and 1 hour depending on the complexity of the size, pose and other requirements of the mould.

With life casting, the moulds are can sometimes be imperfect. They have to be applied quickly and without some of the fail-safe techniques usually employed in object mould making. There is no chance to try again. It is a moment in time.

With minor things, I always prefer not to “fix ” the castings if they have small bubbles or other imperfections. I have found that too much work on the surface after the fact tends to draw more attention to the eye than a tiny bubble or other minor attribute.

The beauty is in the moment and the skin texture itself. Smoothing and sanding takes all this away.

While life casting can be an exciting and rewarding experience, it may also be daunting for some individuals.

I take the health and safety (and comfort) of our clients seriously, and we will not agree to any life-casting without the verbal and enthusiastic consent of the person sitting for the process. It is important to note that life casting may not be suitable for everyone, and some individuals may experience discomfort or claustrophobia during the process. Therefore, we always recommend discussing any concerns with our team before proceeding.

For those who do choose to undergo the life-casting process, the experience is usually memorable and positive.
